1. "CHECK CAR BATTERY"...Have a portable radio. Always check emergency cooking
facilities and flashlights.
2. "CHECK YOUR SUPPLY OF HEATING FUEL"...
3. "CHECK YOUR FOOD"...and stock of extra supplies. Your supplies should include food
that requires no cooking or refrigeration should there be a power failure.
4. "PREVENT FIRE"...hazards due to overheating coal, oil
burning stoves, fireplaces, heaters, or furnace.
5. "STAY INDOORS"...the storm and cold snaps unless your are in peak physical condition.
If you must go out avoid overexertion.
6. "DON'T KILL YOURSELF SHOVELING SNOW"...It is extremely hard work for anyone in less than
prime physical condition and can bring on a "HEART ATTACK", a major cause of death during
and after winter storms.
7. "RURAL RESIDENTS" Make necessary trips for supplies before the storm develops
or not at all: Arrange for emergency heat supplies in case of power failure. Be
sure camp stoves and lanterns are filled.
8. "DRESS TO FIT THE SEASON" If you spend much time outdoors, wear loose-fitting,
light weight, warm clothing in several layers.
9. "YOUR AUTOMOBILE"... can be your best friend or worst enemy....during winter storms.
Get your car winterized before the storm season begins.
10. "BE EQUIPPED FOR THE WORST"... Carry a winter storm car kit, especially if going
cross country. Carry extra blankets or sleeping bags...matches...candles...
paper towels...facial tissue...extra clothing...high calorie, nonperishable food...
compass and road maps...knife...first aid kit...shovel...broom...sack of sand...
booster cables...flashlight...batteries...signal light...window scraper...
tow chains....fire extinguisher...catalytic heater...axe...
..."WINTER TRAVEL BY CAR IS SERIOUS BUSINESS..TAKE YOUR TRAVEL SERIOUSLY"...
1. Should the storm exceed or even test your limitations seek available refuge
immediately.
2. Plan your travel and select primary and alternate routes.
3. Check for the latest weather information on your radio.
4. Try not to travel alone: Two or three people are preferable.
5. Always fill your gas tank before entering open country even for a short distance.
6. Make sure you cell phone is charged and carry a charger that will work with your car
battery to charge you cell phone.
