Meteorology Charles A. Giannetta Meteorologist - Professor

"Models Part 1"

1. Scientific Model: Involves observations, speculation and reasoning. 3. Graphical Model: An organized format. Example: When weather observations taken simultaneously are formed into a weather map. 4. Physical Model: To simulate a tornado in a tornado chamber. The use of a model aircraft in a wind tunnel. 5. Hypothesis: To predict the outcome of a project. To put together a research project. 6. Numerical Model: Using mathematical equations in high speed computers.

1. Outgassing: The release of gases from rocks through volcanic eruptions and the impact of meteorites on the surface of the planet. 2. Photosynthesis: Whereby plants use water, sunlight and (CO2), Carbon Dioxide to live and the waste product is (O) Oxygen. 3. Homosphere: Up to about 50 miles. 4. Heterosphere: The region of the atmosphere above 50 miles. 5. Ionosphere: Located primarily with in the thermosphere between 50 and 150 miles up.

"Models Part 2"

6. Photodissociation: The breakdown of molecules by radiation. 7. Aresols: Minute particles of liquids and solid particles in the atmosphere. Water droplets, ice crystals, salts, dust, dirt, smoke, sea salts, volcanic eruptions, agriculture activities.. 8. Primary Air Pollutant: Carbon Monoxide (Electrons), which emanates from the sun and travel through space at 250 to 300 mi. per sec. Takes about 4 days to reach the earth. 11. Solar Flare: Explosion on the sun that produces a shock

1. First Law of Thermodynamics: Energy can be converted from one form to another, it cannot be created nor destroyed. 2. Thermodynamics: The science that deals with the relationship of heat and mechanical energy and the conversion of one into the other. 3. Electromagnetic Radiation: Named because this form of energy has both electrical and magnetic properties. All know object emit electromagnatic radiation.

"Models Part 3"

1. Albert Einsteins's Theory and Equation. E = M times C Squared E = Energy. M = Mass C = The speed of light squared. The speed of light is: 186,000 miles per second. 186,000 X 186,000 = 34,596,000,000. Therefore a very small mass is converted into a enormous amount of energy. 2. Insolation: The amount of radiation which the earth receives from the sun. (Sol) being Latin for Sun. 3. Perihelion: Earth closest to the sun. About Jan. 3. 4. Aphelion: Earth farthest from the Sun. About July 4. 6. Tropic of Capricorn: Located at 23' 27" South Lat. 7. Arctic Circle: Located at 66' 33" N. Lat. 8. Antarctic Circle: Located at 66' 33" S. Lat.
