Honoring NCC Professor Charles A. Giannetta

Charles A. Giannetta
Meteorologist - Professor

On our first day of class Professor Charles Giannetta invited us to call him Mr. G. Mr G. teaches meteorology here at NCC. In one of our first classes about the weather he explained that the water on our planet is the same water that has been on our planet for centuries. He said we never have to worry about not having enough water. We never lose or gain water. It only changes form. Then he said the water he drinks and takes a bath in is the same water Julius Caeser had used in the first century. Because of this process he said he could be the reincarnation of Julius Caesar. Now this was a meteorology class, not philosophy, but if I were to think of Mr. G. as being reincarnated I would imagine him to be the reincarnation of Mark Twain. Mark Twain is one of America's greatest humorists who had the ability to capture life's small truths in his writing and speeches. Let me share with you a little more about Mr. G.

He retired from the National Weather Service after 35 years. His official title is Meteorologist Emeritus. As we learned from him by collecting weather data and creating weather maps we felt as though we were in his weather office. He invites us to go to his website where you will find he has written many articles, see pictures of everything from his son's first car to his wife standing next to a rain bucket that is taller than her. He brought in all kinds of weather instruments and explained how easy it would be for us to study the weather.

He has helped us to know how to get homeowners insurance and what to do if we have a claim. He told us that if we create a one page website we could put this on our resumes. He has share with us many important things that will help us to lead successful lives.

Mr. G. told us all about hidden stress, one of life's small truths. He explained that sometimes five phones would ring at the same time at the weather office. When he went to the doctor for a regular checkup the doctor told him he was under stress and his body needed more electrolytes. He didn't think he was under stress, but agreed it did take a lot of energy to answer five phones quickly. To get more electrolytes into our bodies we need to eat foods high in potassium. He said it was as simple as eating bananas instead of going bananas.

One day I ask Mr. G. for advice about what he thought were good local colleges. We talked about a few, but there was one that stood out in his mind. He said he would feel honored to be among the priests at Allentown College formerly known as Saint Frances de Sales. Allentown College is changing their name again. There is a billboard on Rt. 22 that announces the college's new name, de Sales University, and their slogan. The slogan for DeSales University is "1st Century Values in the 21st Century".

Maybe Professor Giannetta is right. Could he be Julius Caesar reincarnated from the first century? Checkout his website and you will see the library on meteorology he has created. Julius Caesar in the first century founded our first public libraries. Professor Giannetta, like Mark Twain, captures life's small truths. Well, Allentown College may have priests, but it is our honor to have Professor Giannetta here at NCC.
