FORGET FORECAST, LET'S HEAD SOUTH
The Morning Call
There will be snow on top of the ice on top of the snow in the Lehigh Valley today, with 4
inches of new snow forecast by midafternoon, according to the National Weather Service at
Allentown-Bethlehem-Easton Airport. Snowfall today will top lingering traces from the
record-breaking Dec. 27 snowstorm that dumped 8.8 inches on the Valley. Today's snow is
expected to be mixed with or change to sleet by late afternoon, said meteorologist
Charles A. Giannetta.
Freezing rain earlier this week created hazardous road conditions throughout the valley.
Giannetta said the first light flakes should start falling about 7 a.m. today.
"I think we'll see it after daybreak, he said of expected snowfall. "As the day grows older
it will get heavier at times," he said. "There is a possibility of a fair amount of snow and
a significant amount of icing."
"Right now it looks like all of eastern Pennsylvania will be hit," Giannetta said.
"We're going for 6 inches in the Poconos. It may stay colder up there." Giannetta said any
possible storm warning would be issued today.
Officials at all area school districts said no decision had been made as of yesterday to
close schools today. They said any such decision would be made early today. Daytime
temperatures today will be rising from 30 to 32 degrees. Overnight temperatures are expected
to be in the low 30s. Tomorrow's high is expected to be 35-40 degrees.
"We're looking for the forecast to change to rain after midnight Saturday morning,
" Giannetta said. "We're going to get a 1-2-3 punch out of it," he said. There will be
periods of rain and 35-40 degree temperatures during the day tomorrow, he said.
Temperatures are expected to drop overnight tomorrow into the low teens with overnight lows
of 18 to 20 degrees.
