HEAT WAVE TO STAY AROUND UNTIL WEEKEND by JENNIFER MAXWELL, The Morning Call

Keep the lightweight clothing in the front of your closet for the next few days -- Indian summer will not relent until the weekend, according to an area meteorologist. Although no records have been set, the area is experiencing above normal temperatures, said Charles A. Giannetta, a National Weather Service meteorologist at Allentown-Bethlehem-Easton Airport. Normal temperatures now would be in the mid-60s, he said, but don't expect that until the weekend.

"We might still be a little above (normal)," Giannetta said. "But it will be somewhat milder and cooler." Indian summer is any unusually warm period after the first frost, which this area had in September, Giannetta said. But despite the heat, no records have been set so far, he said. To break a record today, temperatures would have to go above the 1949 record of 89 degrees, Giannetta said.

But yesterday was a close one. The record set in 1939 was 83 degrees, and the recorded temperature at A-B-E yesterday was 82 degrees, he said. Monday reached 78 degrees and the record was 81, he said. For the next three days, there is a chance of rain and highs will reach the upper 70s to 80 degrees. The warm front is caused by what is called a Bermuda high -- a high pressure system pumping warm, moist air in from the Atlantic Coast, he said.
