SHIRT-SOAKING HEAT FAILS TO SET RECORD by YARKO KUK, The Morning Call

It was sooooo hot and uncomfortable yesterday, it must have set an all-time high record, right? Wrong. Yesterday's high of 89 degrees at 3 p.m. was nowhere near the record high of 98 for the same day, set in 1924.

What made the 89 degrees seem like 189 to some Lehigh Valley residents was the humidity, which has averaged about 60 percent these past few days.

According to Charles A. Giannetta, National Weather Service meteorologist at Allentown-Bethlehem-Easton Airport, later this week we can expect a break in the sticky, muggy weather that has hung over the Valley like a damp cloth.

Giannetta, who has been a meteorologist 33 years, the last 18 at A-B-E, said the Valley can expect a high in the upper 70s to low 80s and drop in humidity tomorrow. The reprieve should last until at least Friday, when it is possible the hotter, muggier weather again will settle in the Valley. ''This is not really out of the ordinary,'' Giannetta said. He said the normal high for Aug. 6 is 84 degrees. The meteorologist said there was no storm system that was causing the sticky weather, and just as it is likely the muggy weather will pass this week, it is also very likely we will experience more of the sticky weather on and off for the rest of the summer.

For all of yesterday's uncomfortable conditions, Giannetta said, ''At least it isn't 1924, (referring to the high of 98). They didn't have air conditioners back then.''
