FIRST SNOW IN WEEKS COATS AREA
MORE ACCUMULATION FORECAST TODAY, TONIGHT
The Morning Call
A fresh blanket of snow - normally no stranger to the Lehigh Valley but an infrequent happening this winter - greeted churchgoers yesterday.
It measured 1.7 inches and was the first significant snowfall in almost a month.
A new covering of snow may be on the way later today, , according to the National Weather Service at Allentown-Bethlehem-Easton Airport.
The forecast last night was for a 40 percent chance of snow toward evening today with light winds and a high temperature in the mid-30s.
Late today and early tomorrow the chance of snow increases to 70 percent, said Charles Giannetta, NWS meteorologist.
The low temperature tonight will be in the mid-20s and the high tomorrow will be in the low 30s.
''We are not mentioning amounts at this time,'' he said, adding only that it should not be a heavy snowfall.
Yesterday's accumulation surprised many people, but they took it in stride because there was no morning rush-hour to contend with.
It was the first snowfall since Jan. 6 when 3.7 inches of snow landed.
The snow came just three days after a prediction for six more weeks of winter by a well-known, venerable groundhog.
Giannetta said the amount of snow this winter remains well below normal in the Lehigh Valley.
''We've had just 5.7 inches so far. The norm for December is 6.5 inches and for January it's 8.5 inches or a total of 15 inches for both months,'' he said. ''So we are almost 10 inches below normal to date.''
In checking the NWS records, he said the norm for February is 9.4 inches; for March, 5.7 inches; and for April, 0.8 inches.
