Tornadoes are nature's most violent storms and cause millions of dollars in
property damage and kill many people each year. While most damage is caused
by the violent winds, most injuries and deaths are by caused by flying
debris.
Tornadoes occur in many parts of the world, however, no region is more
favorable than the plains and Gulf Coast of the United States, the peak
season April, May and June. Tornadoes are least frequent during the winter
months, even though they can occur anytime of the year.
Tornadoes are usually associated with severe thunderstorms, and may or may
not be accompanied by hail. The larger the hail, the more severe the
thunderstorms. Tornadoes occur on the:

Most move from southwest to northeast, however, their direction can be very
erratic. The time a tornado spends on the ground may vary from a few
minutes to many hours.
Most travel about 30 mph, but range from stationary. to 70 mph and may
travel hundreds of miles.
Most tonadoes occur during the mid afternoon to early evening. They can
occur at anytime and without any warning.
Winds may reach speeds in:

Most tornadoes are in the 100 to 150 mph range.

When a tornado is aloft, not touching the ground, it is called a:

Only when the funnel cloud touches the ground is it called a tornado.
