The number of gallons of water, and the number of tons of water over 1 acre and 100 acres. 1. 43,681 sq. ft = 1 acre. An acre is 209 ft. by 209 ft. 209 X 209 = 43681 Sq. Ft. in 1 acre. --------------------------------------------- 2. We now change 209 ft into inches. 209 Ft. X 12 Ins. = 2508 inches. 2508 In. X 2508 Ins. = 6,290,064 sq. inches. ---------------------------------------------- 3. Now we change sq. ins. to cubic inches. 6,290,064 sq. ins. X 1 in. = 6,290,064 cubic inches in 1 inch of rain over one square acre. ------------------------------------------------------------------ 4. 1 gallon of water contains 231 cubic inches. We must divide this into the number of cubic inches. 6,290,064 divided by 231 = 27,230 gallons of water in 1 inch of rain over 1 square acre. ------------------------------------------------------------------- 5. Now to find how much the 1 inch of water over 1 sq. acre weighs. A gallon of water weighs 7 pounds. 27,230 gals. X 7 Lbs. = 190,610 pounds in 1 inch of water over 1 acre. ----------------------------------------------------------------- 6. There are 2,000 lbs. in 1 Ton. 190,610 divided by 2,000 lbs. = 95 tons. per acre with 1 in of rain. ------------------------------------------------------------------ 7. If 2 inches of rain fell over 1 acre we would have 54,460 gallons, or 190 tons. ------------------------------------------------------------------ 8. If 4 inches of rain fell over 1 acre we would have 108,920 gallons or 380 tons. ------------------------------------------------------------------ 9. If 1 inch of rain fell over 100 sq. acres we would have 2,723,000 gallons, or 9,500 tons. ------------------------------------------------------------------ 10. If 4 inchs of rain fell over 100 sq. acres we would have 10,892,000 gallons, or 38,000 tons. ----------------------------------------------------------------- Interesting Fact: The average automible weighs about 3,500 pounds.
