**Heating Degree Days**

A heating degree day is the departure of one degree per day in the mean daily temperture from a standard reference temperature of usually 65 degrees F.

The number of heating degree days for an individual day is the actual departure of the mean temperature for the standard, and the number of days in a month, is the sum of all the daily values.

When the mean temperature on a givin day is 65 degrees F., or higher, that day is not considered in making the monthly total. For example. the mean temperature of 75° 65°, 60°, 52°, 48°:, 57°:, the daily degree days for summation would be 0, 0, 5, 13, 17, 8 degrees.

65°: F. was chosen the standard because the minimum temperature of bodily comfort in the home is reached when the mean daily temperature falls below that value.

A knowledge of the degree days to be expected for a givin month in a given area is useful for residential and industrial heating purposes. The more heating degrees days per day, month, or season, the more energy it takes to keep your home warm.

Fuel companies also make their deliveries according to how many degree days there are. Other utility companies use heating degree days in estimating how much energy will be consumed in the future.
